Lawn aeration removes plugs of soil from the lawn, permitting water to reach the root zone of the grass. It also promotes the flow of oxygen and fertilizer to the roots. Once the lawn is aerated, only sporadic watering will be required because the lawn will permit better water percolation. In addition, the aeration will enable the grass to absorb moisture from a larger soil area.
Deep plug aeration will remove plugs that are deeper than those yielded by regular aeration processes. The plugs removed from healthy lawns will usually be at least three inches long. If the lawn is very hard or unhealthy, the plugs will be a bit smaller. Watering the lawn one to two days before aeration will cause aeration to draw a longer plug, and the deeper the plug the better. The plugs also serve a purpose in the lawn care process. The nutrients contained in the soil rest on top of the lawn and are eventually absorbed by the root of the grass. This strengthens the roots and encourages additional root growth. Aeration is also used to break up one of the lawns biggest enemies, thatch. This can be extremely detrimental to a lawn because it promotes the growth of damaging fungus and is also a home to many insects that thrive on grass. An additional danger of thatch is that water and other nutrients cannot penetrate it and the lawn will suffer because of this. Compact soil can be a challenge for any lawn. Aerating the lawn will break the hard soil up and allow it to grow roots again. When the soil is rock hard, it is very tough for not only the water to penetrate and get deep into the ground, but also for the roots to properly spread. These are but a few of the benefits of lawn aeration, but rest assured that they are all important. When this is done during the right seasons, the lawn is able to enjoy better water retention and can continue to allow its roots to grow stronger. Over time, even the most stubborn lawn will soften and become plush and green when in season.
