If you want to rock out with the leather jacket look, go for it. But make sure you know what looks good on you. Far too many people think they can pull off a look they have seen in movies, only to waste their money on leather jackets that go out of style or was never in style in the first place. Answer a lot of questions about the coat before you even step into the store--questions such as: color, shape, utility, and overall look. Find a style that can put you in fashion AND put your personal message across.

Certain jackets should only be worn if you actually do own a motorcycle. Motorcycle jackets are called that because they serve a purpose on a bike; that is why they have been the staple of riders for upwards of sixty years. They have never, however, been known for being particularly stylish--with maybe the exception of Fonzie. But there can only be one Fonzie and you are not him. These jackets are short, roomy in the arm and shoulder, and usually covered in zippers, chains, or designs. This is unflattering. Don't let yourself be fooled by thinking it looks tough.

These jackets tend to be a statement piece no matter what they have on them, so it is better to under-state it. Keep it simple. These same style jackets, minus all the zippers, can be a better looking piece of clothing. The only problem is, you could look like a 1950s greaser. Don't wear these with tight jeans and sneakers!

Bomber jackets are a classic style that has hung on for decades. They are called that due to the fact that bombers (as in pilots) wore them. You can define one of these coats by its color (almost always dark brown), its elastic (at waist, wrists, and sometimes collar), and its style (very baggy arms and torso--almost puffy). Though it isn't the absolute best look, it will always be in style and you will never have to worry about getting a new one.

Rock stars and other celebrities have popularized longer, straighter leather coats in various colors. This is a better look since it is slimming and not so 'macho' looking. However, keep in mind that brightly colored leather (even a vibrant tan) photographs far better than it looks in real life. While it may look great on your rock idol, a blue or purple leather coat can give you a lot of negative attention. Keep your color palette neutral--dark browns and blacks. If the leather could naturally be that color, then it is probably a good option. Remember, too, that leather coats are expensive. This is not a good time to try a new style or do something outrageous. You want your coat to last for decades.

The three-quarters leather jacket (the full-length one) should never be worn, for the sake of style. You run the risk of either looking like an extra in a Western or an extra from "The Matrix." Unless you are spending a great deal of time outside where the coat could provide coverage, no one should even own these eye-sores. In fact, with the decent outdoor gear available, these coats should never be worn, outside or not.

If you are a man looking for a good coat, here are some principles: dark brown or black coats without a lot of sheen to them are best. It should be hip length with a straight arm--neither baggy nor tight. If the coat fits you as it is on the hangar, it is a good coat. Something that expensive should be professionally tailored or fit you right off the rack. None of this adjustable zipper or pulley nonsense.

For women, follow these same principles. Make sure all the zippers are covered. A corset top leather coat is posh and can even be worn for a top. The coats on women should end a little higher on the torso than a man's. The arm should be more fitted. Above all, make sure the jacket has good structure to keep your curves in view. The coat should not be tight, but be very structured to your shape. Do not go for boxy coats! They look good on men but can add thirty pounds to a woman's frame.
